I want to start by acknowledging something that takes real courage to admit: you have something to say, and some part of you knows the world needs to hear it out loud — not just see it on a page, not just feel it in a private notebook, but hear it, in a room, in your voice, with your whole body behind it. And maybe that thought thrills you and terrifies you in equal measure. I get that. That tension is exactly where spoken word lives.

I built this program because I've seen what happens when poets are given only half the tools. They write beautifully but freeze at the mic. Or they perform with raw energy but haven't yet shaped their words to land with precision. Or they've been performing for years on instinct alone, and they're hungry for a framework that names what they already feel. The Spoken Word Certificate addresses all of it — not as separate skills to stack on top of each other, but as four pillars that hold each other up: Page, Voice, Presence, and Performance.

Here's what I want you to know about how this works: we don't start with performance. We start with identity — who are you as a poet, and what is your work actually about? From there, we build. You'll learn to write with emotional clarity and structural intention, to shape sound devices — rhythm, repetition, rhyme — as tools, not ornaments. You'll develop real breath support and vocal command, not the kind that sounds trained and artificial, but the kind that sounds more like you. You'll learn what your body is already saying when you stand still, and how to make it say something on purpose. And you'll rehearse for real audiences, learn to read a room, and understand the community and ethics of the stage you're stepping into.

The capstone is where it all becomes real. You'll curate a portfolio, write an artist's statement that articulates your voice and vision, and deliver a full spoken word performance — reviewed, witnessed, and celebrated. The certificate you earn at the end of this journey represents demonstrated craft. It's proof of something you actually did.

I don't believe this work belongs only to people who've always felt confident or always had something to say.
